FBI APOSTILLE
An FBI fingerprinting appointment for apostille purposes is a specific process designed to obtain your Identity History Summary (often called an FBI background check), which can then be apostilled for use in a foreign country. Here’s how it works step-by-step:
🔹 Purpose:
You're getting fingerprinted to request your FBI criminal background check, which will then be apostilled by the U.S. Department of State for legal use overseas (e.g., for immigration, visas, work permits, dual citizenship, marriage abroad).
🔹 Step-by-Step: How a Fingerprinting Appointment Works
1. Schedule Your Appointment
- You contact a fingerprinting service provider (mobile or in-office) authorized to roll fingerprints on the FBI FD-258 card.
- Confirm that they can properly roll ink prints or capture prints digitally for FBI background check purposes.
2. Bring Required Items
- A valid government-issued photo ID (passport, driver’s license, etc.)
- Payment method (cash, card, or check—depends on provider)
- Any specific paperwork you were given (like an FBI channeler submission form, if using one)
- Optional: Bring your own FD-258 fingerprint card, but most providers have them.
3. Fingerprinting Process
- The technician will ink or scan your fingerprints using a standard FBI-compliant process.
- They’ll roll each finger individually, then four fingers together.
- Tips for clients:
- Relax your hands.
- Make sure fingers are clean and dry.
- Nails shouldn’t be too long.
4. Receive Your FD-258 Card(s)
- You’ll receive a completed FD-258 fingerprint card (or digital file if electronic).
- Double-check that your name, date of birth, and other personal info are accurate.
- Some providers offer to scan and email it to you as a digital file if you plan to submit online.
🔹 Next Step: Submitting to FBI
You have two main options:
▶️ Option A: Submit Directly to FBI
- Submit your fingerprint card with your application on the FBI website.
- Pay the $18 fee online.
- Mail your FD-258 card to the FBI.
- You'll get a digital PDF result via email.
▶️ Option B: Use an FBI-Approved Channeler
- A channeler is a private business authorized to expedite FBI background checks.
- They submit your fingerprints electronically and get faster results.
- Some channelers can assist with apostille services too.
🔹 Getting the Apostille
Once you have your FBI background check result (PDF or hard copy), you must apostille it through:
🏛 U.S. Department of State – Office of Authentications
- Mail them the original FBI background check (hard copy version only).
- Include a completed Form DS-4194 and the required fee.
- If you received a digital background check, you must:
- Print it out in color on white paper.
- Request a hard copy authenticated version from the FBI for apostille.
🔹 Timeline
- Fingerprint appointment: 10–15 minutes.
- FBI processing: 3–5 business days (faster with a channeler).
- Apostille processing: 2–4 weeks (rush services may be available via third-party agencies).
- We do not submit the background check or apostille
- We can offer a checklist to follow and refer you to a channeler if needed.
